(STRAIGHT OUT THE PRINT) W/ SEMAJ

In his official visual for “HER,” Semaj weaves together gritty urban realism and tender flashback vignettes to explore themes of longing and memory. From the opening dusk skyline to the final silhouette, the director leans into stark contrasts—warm flashbacks in diners versus the cool steel of abandoned warehouses—to punctuate the song’s emotional journey.

Cinematographer Alex Rivera employs a mix of fluid crane shots (notably the 360° rooftop circle) and handheld close-ups, creating both epic and intimate moments. The careful color grading—transitioning between muted blues and vibrant neon—underscores the tension between past warmth and present isolation. Costuming is minimalist but effective: Semaj’s leather jacket and dark denim ground him in an everyman persona, while the unnamed female lead remains a stylized memory, appearing only in silhouette or monochrome, reinforcing her fleeting, dreamlike presence.

Overall, “HER” succeeds as both a performance piece and a short film: it’s cinematic without feeling over-styled, emotive without veering into melodrama, and reserves its most poignant moments for subtle shifts in lighting and color rather than overt dialogue or plot.

8.5/10 semaj’s “HER” stands as a testament to how a modest budget, when wielded thoughtfully, can yield a visually compelling and emotionally resonant music video.
